Chinese people don't 'eat'
Chinese people can't be separated from 'eating': making a living is called → hú kou (getting by), a job is called → rice bowl, being employed is called → hun̄ fan, spending savings is called → eating through old capital, doing well is called → eating well, taking advantage of a woman is called → eating tofu, a woman's beauty is called → feast for the eyes, being welcomed is called → eating fragrant, being taken care of is called → eating a special meal, being selfish is called → eating alone, suffering harm is called → taking a loss, a woman's jealousy is called → eating vinegar. This is why everyone asks 'Have you eaten?' when they meet.
