Nitroglycerin (NG) is both a powerful explosive and a raw material for gunpowder. NG can be mixed with high-nitrogen NC or with low-nitrogen NC in the presence of acetone to produce blasting gelatin, which is a jelly-like elastic substance and the most water-resistant type of mining explosive. NG is highly sensitive and cannot be used in bullets, but after being adsorbed with substances like activated carbon powder or cotton, it can be used in landmines. When a small amount of NG is ignited with a flame, it usually only burns, with pale or slightly blue flames and a hissing sound, and generally does not explode. After being mixed with NC and other additives and subjected to pressing and rolling, NG can be used to make common gunpowder for firearms, or rocket propellants, making it an important smokeless gunpowder. NG can be mixed with ethanol to form a 1% solution, or made into tablets for sublingual administration to treat heart, gallbladder, kidney colic, and Raynaud's disease. Its effect is rapid and short-lived, making it a commonly used medication.
