Chapter 4: The Tasks of the Infiltrators and the Defenders
Looking at the glasses that suddenly appeared, Old Wan and I exchanged a knowing smile: 'Hey, you arrived right on time! If you had been a bit later, once the defenders' troops arrived, the game would have officially started, and then you couldn't join in.'
'Hehe, an online girl insisted on video chatting because she thought her brother was handsome; we were chatting and chatting and just lost track of time,' Glasses shamelessly bragged, making Old Wan and me feel a bit nauseous.
'Enough! You just overslept, didn't you? Who doesn't know that when you sleep, you sleep like a dead pig?'
'Tch!' Glasses rolled his eyes at us and glanced left and right at District 13: 'So, it's really District 13 inside? It's exactly the same as the map in the game! Remember, if danger arises later, we mustn't run around recklessly.' Seeing that we all understood, Glasses didn't say much more. All players know that being alone is the easiest way to bite the dust.
'Huh?! There are so many people here; could they all be infiltrators?'
'You can tell by their clothes! Just now, I heard that Rockman (Rockman? Captain, I mean… said that only our infiltrator mercenary troops have arrived in District 13. Their defender mercenary troops will also parachute into District 13 soon! It's going to get lively then.'
'I have to add something here!' Old Wan, who came in earlier than us, surely wouldn't say anything pointless.
'Our current identity is infiltrator. In the game, infiltrator mercenaries and defender mercenaries have always been like oil and water. Although this is a joint mission, don't be naive enough to call the other side brothers; you never know when someone might stab you in the back. The defender troops will parachute into District 13 soon; when that happens, everyone handle things as you see fit!'
Hmm! I nodded silently. What Old Wan said made sense; in the face of danger, as long as someone needs to use you, who knows what they might do? That's why you can't let your guard down.
Just as the three of us were discussing our next plan, a tremor suddenly came from above, followed by a powerful sound of air tearing—the sound? All mercenaries looked up to see… an airplane?!
Two huge military transport planes! It seems the defender mercenary troops have arrived!Watching the visitor in the sky, Captain Locke crawled out of the Infiltrators' tent, took a deep puff of his cigar, and raised his middle finger to the sky: "Damn it, even their plane is better than ours! Are they deliberately showing off here?!"
Huh? Everyone originally thought the plane would land, but who would have known the plane actually flew higher and higher, and from below, the two large planes looked like two small black dots in the sky. Captain Locke, however, sneered knowingly: "Hmph, here we go again!"
"Those guys are jumping out!" a sharp-eyed mercenary shouted. Sure enough, many people saw them. More and more small black dots appeared in the sky, constantly falling from the two military planes. Amid the crowd's exclamations, the sky eventually became filled with countless black dots.
"Wow, there are so many of them!" As the mercenaries exclaimed, Captain Locke felt even more irritated: "Hmph! They always deliberately play these tricks. Isn't it just that they are richer than us Infiltrators? And aren't they all just a bunch of government-paid dogs! What's so great about having a lot of people? What I want are elite fighters, not a bunch of useless people!"
In the world, there are two major mercenary factions: the Infiltrators and the Guardians.
Infiltrators usually come from civilians or are composed of experienced retired soldiers. Their composition is mixed, and there are often situations where rookies lag behind. Fortunately, the Infiltrator Mercenary Guild provides strict military training for newcomers, so such situations gradually decrease.
The Guardians, on the other hand, are mercenary groups specifically established by the government, each member being an elite trained by the state.
The biggest difference between Infiltrator mercenaries and Guardian mercenaries is: one is a private civilian organization, and the other is an elite organization trained by various countries. Since they are funded by the government, Guardian mercenaries never lack money!
Whenever Locke saw those arrogant Guardian mercenaries, he would get furious, because the Guardians believed that being hired with government money made them more noble, and they had always looked down on the Infiltrators composed of civilians.
It was precisely because of these reasons that the Infiltrators and Guardians often clashed, being as incompatible as water and fire!It seemed to be a routine for them; each protector, after descending from the sky, quickly unhooks their parachute, organizes their gear, and swiftly assembles together. In no time, all the protectors were lined up, row after row, standing in perfect order, making one inevitably admire their disciplined training!
"Haha, I'm here!"
Just as everyone was admiring them, a very arrogant voice suddenly came from the sky!
Everyone looked up and saw: a person leaping straight out of an airplane, stretching their limbs like a large bird. After a beautiful 360-degree aerial spin, they leisurely opened their parachute and slowly descended to the ground under everyone's gaze.
Once they landed, they quickly untied the ropes and stepped out of the parachute, revealing a valiant, imposing foreign man wearing sunglasses and showing an air of arrogance. The moment he appeared, all the protector mercenaries shouted loudly in unison: "Greetings, Captain!"
"Mamma mia!" Old Wan and I exchanged glances, and all the undercover agents present exclaimed together: "What an awesome way to make an entrance!"
Seeing the stunned expressions of us undercover agents, the protector captain proudly nodded: "Hmm, not bad, not bad! I didn't expect your undercover mercenary group to send quite a few people this time!" Suddenly, changing his tone, he faced the protectors and shouted: "Protectors, report your numbers!"
"Yes! Captain David, 1, 2, 3... reporting to the Captain, all the protectors are present!"
The captain looked extremely satisfied, then turned his head to look at our scattered group of undercover agents and cleared his throat: "Hello, fellow travelers! We protectors have arrived, you've been waiting for us for a long time, haven't you? Haha, sorry about that, usually the best ace arrives last, hope you all can understand! By the way, I believe you already know my identity. I am the captain of the protectors, named—'David Ismore! You can call me Captain David!'
After David finished speaking, all the undercover agents present felt extremely irritated: what an arrogant, annoying guy! This also included the infiltrator captain, Locke. Locke swaggered over with a cigar in his mouth, walked up to David, took a deep puff from his cigar, and then blew a thick cloud of smoke straight into David's face, saying while blowing: “Oh my, it stinks here! Which bastard is farting in front of me?!”
“You…” David quickly stepped back, angrily pulling down his cool sunglasses: “You dare…?”
Before David could finish his sentence, Locke interrupted: “Dare? Dare what? Do you want to start a fight?!”
With Locke's words, all the infiltrators glared at David. At the same time, all the Guardians in the 13th District stood behind David, facing the infiltrators. The scene was tense, and a fight could break out at any moment.
Seeing Locke's arrogant behavior, David was angry but had to hold back. He shouted ‘Stop!' and, with a hum, led the Guardians to a distance to start setting up the Guardians' camp.
He knew in his heart: now was not the time for a fight. The government was very interested in the strange new virus in the 13th District, and if the two sides started fighting, heavy casualties would be bad. In fact, this time was just about finding virus samples, with no need to bring so many people. But David had heard that many infiltrators were coming, so he intentionally brought a large group to overwhelm the infiltrators in terms of presence. If a fight broke out and everyone returned injured, it wouldn't look good to the higher-ups!
“Hmph, it's you again, Locke! I'll make you regret this when I get the chance!”
“Hehe! I didn't expect such a dramatic scene before the game even officially starts!” Glasses and Lao Wan grinned mischievously. It seemed the two of them were quite excited. I, however, frowned, feeling a bad premonition for some reason, though I couldn't explain why. Shaking my head, I realized that dream had affected me too deeply! Forget it, I comforted myself: it's just a game, why think so much?
Seeing the opponent struggle, Locke laughed smugly, then turned around and shouted: “Infiltrator mercenaries, listen up! Everyone return to the main tent and sit down immediately, we're about to start the official meeting!”I walked and talked with Old Wan, saying, "Hehe, it looks like Captain Locke is really reliable! At first, I thought he was just a pretty but useless figurehead."
Old Wan, after hearing this, scoffed, "No matter how powerful he is, he's just a game NPC! There are no captains in CF! Damn, I didn't expect CF to pull this kind of thing too! In my opinion, this is purely for show; in the end, we'll still have to rely on ourselves!"
"Guys, when the time comes, just pray for the best!" (End of this chapter)

The author's daydreaming somehow doesn't seem quite suitable for the CF format… Setting in NPCs and such goes against CF's principle of putting players first.
I agree with the boss.
