Chapter 26: An Unexpected Encounter
Watching Old Wan make those disgustingly exaggerated facial expressions, I felt both angry and amused: this guy, with one foot, kicked us to the brink of death, and with the other foot, kicked us back to Earth. I really didn't know what to say about him.
"By the way, where are we now?"
Dead Demon Monster looked around. Since the tunnel was very dark, he could only see his companions nearby. He opened his pack and took out a high-intensity military flashlight, lightly twisted it on, and a long beam of light flashed through the tunnel. The Dead Demon Monster used the flashlight to examine the surrounding environment and found that we were in a dried-up sewer. The sewer was over 2 meters high and about 4 meters wide, and standing here, it felt not cramped at all.
"Wow, this is the sewer of District 13? It's pretty big!" Old Wan wiped his face, and just as he put his hand down, his expression changed. His hand seemed to have touched something furry. Instinctively, he brought it to his eyes to look: among a clump of long hair, several small paws waved back and forth, and a tail curled up his arm. Old Wan let out an 'ouch' and quickly threw it away. The little thing hit the ground, made a few sharp squeaks, and disappeared somewhere.
"Such a disgusting thing!" Seeing the mouse he had thrown away, Old Wan spat a few times on his hands and quickly wiped them.
"This place is huge! It's frustrating. Where do you think this sewer leads?" Dead Demon Monster shone the flashlight into the tunnel, but the light could not reach the end of the dark passage.
"It really is big! Let's go forward and have a look." Everyone nodded. If the path above was no longer passable, then we had to find another way here.
Since there is a sewer, there must be a path leading to it—this is common knowledge. It's just uncertain where this sewer actually leads in District 13. If it leads to a safe place, that would be best, but if it leads to a place near the bioweapon ghosts, that wouldn't be fun.
In the dark sewer, with the light from Dead Demon Monster's flashlight, the three of us slowly advanced. Perhaps due to the environment, people naturally feel fear in the dark, and as we walked, we couldn't help but feel tense.
"Wow!"“In this creepy place, it really does feel a bit like an adventure.” We had just escaped danger, and Lao Wan started to talk slick again.
“Yeah, the atmosphere here is actually pretty good.” I gave Lao Wan a look, silently praying that there wouldn't be any danger.
“Don't worry!” Lao Wan said with a laugh, patting my shoulder. “It's impossible that there's anything even here… ugh!”
Before Lao Wan could finish his sentence, I immediately rushed over and covered his mouth. “Say less of those unpleasant things.” That guy, whenever something bad happens, it's bound to come true if he says it. I was scared by the bio-zombies, and I couldn't let his jinx come true.
“Eh?” After walking for a while, the dead speculator at the front suddenly stopped: “It looks like there's a door there!”
“What door?”
We went forward to take a look. Ah, how did a metal door appear here? In the middle of the long sewer, some iron railings were blocking the way, and in the middle of the railings was an iron door. Overall, it looked like the kinds of iron doors you see in movies about prisons.
And it was this iron door blocking the sewer, stopping us from moving forward. How could there be an iron door blocking the way here?
“This is really annoying!” Lao Wan shook his head. “A broken door dares to block us? Let me destroy it.”
“Hey, wait a minute…”
Before I could finish speaking, Lao Wan had already raised his large-caliber machine gun and unleashed a spray of bullets at the lock on the iron door. Countless bullets hit the iron door with a clanging sound, sparks flying as the sewer flashed from the gunfire. The sound waves echoed in the enclosed space, making it particularly loud.
After a burst of shooting, the whole lock had been deformed by Lao Wan's gunfire. Lao Wan chuckled, kicked the door, and with a loud clanging sound, the iron door swung open. “Let's go!” Lao Wan waved at us, who were left in shock.
Wait, what's that sound? Just after we crossed the iron door, I stopped. It seemed like I could hear some chattering noise in my ears. I paused and listened carefully, and the sound became clearer. Lao Wan and the dead speculator also heard it and listened cautiously.
“This sounds like… the noise of rats!”Listening carefully, Lao Wan suddenly remembered the mouse he had thrown away earlier, and then he realized—mice, yes, mice, and a whole bunch of them! You never know until you look, and once you do, it's terrifying! They were really mice, and a huge group of them was chattering and coming over from the opposite side of the sewer. They were getting closer and closer, with the naked eye only able to see a large, wriggling black mass on the ground, moving one after another.
Seeing so many mice running from the other side really gave a chilling feeling: 'Lao Wan, you idiot! Could the mouse you threw away earlier be their ancestor?'
'How would I know!'
Lao Wan swallowed and his face looked as ugly as ever. 'Sophie, we better leave quickly. Maybe that mouse has come back with its whole family and even aunts and cousins to take revenge on me!'
As the saying goes, the coming are not kind, the kind never come. Who knows how sharp the teeth of these long-time underground ancestors are? After all, even a mighty dragon can't suppress the local snake. We should stick to the old strategy: the best plan is to run!
Under the shaking flashlight of the Dead Demon, we started running desperately. My heart was really frustrated right now: I had just escaped from the claws of the biological ghosts, and now I've run into these little ancestors? What else can I do but run! By the way, why are we always running...
'We better run faster!' The Dead Demon ran the fastest and said: 'I once saw on TV that the mice living in the sewers are generally larger because they are in contact with the pollutants there for years. Some mice even have poisonous teeth, and getting bitten by them is no joke.'
Those little ancestors were indeed formidable! Glancing back at the countless black shadows behind us while running, I looked at Lao Wan: 'Why don't we just throw you to them? Maybe that'll help hold them off!'
'What!'
Lao Wan's eyes widened in anger: 'Are you kidding? At a time like this, you're joking?!'
'Huh? Look over there!' The Dead Demon, who ran the fastest, seemed to have discovered something. Following his voice, under the flashlight, we saw that ahead was the end of the sewer. There was a small step with a light on it, and inside the step was an iron door.Although this sewer is already out of use, I suppose those who once maintained it must have walked out from that room with the steps. We quickly ran up the steps and aimed at the keyhole in the door slit, sending several magazine rounds flying. 'Bang!' The door lock was destroyed, and we rushed into the room together, turned around to close the door, but the death spirit somehow found a long iron rod and used it to brace the door. I touched the door and felt it should be firmly blocked, and only then did my anxious heart settle. The death spirit glanced at Lao Wan: 'Hey, my dear lice comrade, why do you always like to get us into trouble?' 'What do you mean I cause trouble? How is that my business? All those countless rats were the bosses of the sewer, of course they check out if someone intrudes into their turf! Also, can you stop calling me "my dear lice comrade"? If someone unfamiliar hears that, they might really think that the two of us, you and me, the death spirit, have some relationship!' 'Ah, you jinx, how dare you scold me, the death spirit...' I touched my ears, not wanting to listen to the quarrel between the death spirit and Lao Wan. Actually, I think Lao Wan isn't wrong this time; we really did intrude into their territory just now. But if Lao Wan hadn't arbitrarily damaged the iron door with his gun, those swarms of rats wouldn't have been attracted here. Anyway, in any case, the 'sewer rat crisis' has safely passed. Looking around the room up and down, I noticed it's different from those empty buildings. There are still some cabinets, chairs, and such furnishings, as if someone had used them before. Huh, there's also a passage leading upward! I walked over curiously, and before getting close to the passage, suddenly, a black gun barrel stretched out from above, pressing against my head. 'Don't move!' The voice sounded like a girl's. Huh? Who is it? Could it be another guard? Oh my, why is our luck so bad? Every time we think it's safe, a new danger is waiting for us. We are just so unlucky! 'What the heck! How could it be you, Xiao Bai?' Lao Wan behind me exclaimed in surprise. What? Xiao Bai? I instinctively looked up, and, oh my god, it really was Xiao Bai!How could she appear here? "Ah! Captain, it's you guys?" Xiaobai put down his gun, revealing an excited face, and happily ran to hug me: "Captain, it's really you guys, that's great, you're still alive!"
"Hehe, aren't you afraid I'll get jealous if you hug another man in front of me, wife?" A very familiar voice came from behind Xiaobai.
Gaara?! (End of this chapter)
