If you read Journey to the West in reverse: The Buddha sends the master and his three disciples along with the Eight Heavenly Dragons and the White Dragon to the Eastern Tang Empire to spread Buddhism. Along the way, they encounter various demons. After fighting them, they realize that all the demons have powerful connections and can commit evil without punishment. Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing feel it's too dark and each leaves—one hides in Gao Village and the other goes into the Flowing Sand River. Only Wukong insists on justice, fighting demons and monsters along the way to escort the master to preach. Eventually, the heavenly court can no longer tolerate Wukong and reaches an agreement with the Buddha: "We can guarantee Tang Sanzang will arrive safely in Chang'an, but you must deal with this troublemaker Sun Wukong." The Buddha agrees, and through a plot, the White Dragon is severely injured and falls into a mountain stream. Wukong is defeated and trapped under the Five Fingers Mountain, while Tang Sanzang abandons him and continues to Chang'an alone. After completing his preaching there, Sanzang is ennobled and enjoys wealth and honors until his natural death. Five hundred years later, Wukong finally escapes from beneath the Five Fingers Mountain. Without a word, he turns the heavenly court upside down. The heavenly court, forced into a corner, promises to let Zhu Bajie become human and be appointed as Marshal Tianpeng, and Sha Wujing as General of the Curtain, as long as they can kill Wukong. In the end, disheartened by the betrayal of his brothers, Wukong seeks the guidance of Master Bodhi, seals his cultivation, and returns to Flower-Fruit Mountain, living an ordinary life with the monkeys and their descendants. Ultimately, he transforms into a stone at the top of Flower-Fruit Mountain…
