Suppose you are locked in a house without doors or windows (let's not think about how you got in first). There are two holes in the room. One hole flows out of enough soup to sustain life; the other is a hole that can only accommodate one person. This hole can only be entered but cannot be retreated. You don't know the shape of the hole, whether it is a dead end, or whether you can get out of the hole. If I stay in the room, I don't know if I can be rescued, or if I will be killed, or if the soup will suddenly stop flowing.
