(Bei) Wei Emperor Shang Yuan's daughter (February 12, 528 AD - ? ), a Xianbei person, a member of the Northern Wei royal family in China, born in Luoyang, the capital of Northern Wei (present-day Luoyang, Henan Province, China). Her real name is unknown, surname Yuan (originally Tuoba). She was the daughter of Emperor Xiaoming of Northern Wei, Yuan Xu, and the palace concubine Pan Chonghua, and also the only biological child of Emperor Xiaoming. After birth, she was female (i.e., imperial princess), and was supposed to be granted the title of princess. However, due to the dire political situation, her grandmother, Empress Dowager Hu, who held real imperial power, publicly declared her male (i.e., a prince), issued a general amnesty, and adopted Emperor Xiaoming's reign title Wutai. Soon after, Emperor Xiaoming died suddenly. The infant "imperial son" Yuan ascended the throne as the late emperor's only son, nominally becoming the emperor of Northern Wei. On the day Yuan ascended the throne, she was deposed and never actually ascended the throne; there are no further historical records thereafter.
