If the problem does not specify, take both the positive and negative roots. If the problem mentions taking the arithmetic square root, only take the positive root. Negative numbers cannot have even roots; they can only have odd roots, which will all be negative. Positive numbers have both positive and negative roots for even roots, and only a positive root for odd roots.
