A tragedy recently occurred in Indonesia, where an 8-year-old boy drowned another 6-year-old boy over a debt of just 1,000 Indonesian rupiah (approximately 0.6 Chinese yuan).
According to Priyo Widyanto, the head of the Bekasi Police Department in the suburbs of Jakarta, the suspect is an 8-year-old child. He met the victim at a developing residential area in Rawa Bugel Village and pushed the victim into a construction site pit, drowning him. The motive was solely a debt of 1,000 Indonesian rupiah.
Priyo stated that according to Indonesian juvenile criminal law, children over the age of 8 must face legal trial if they commit a crime. This 8-year-old boy will be sent to court.
He said that the boy will be prosecuted for violating the Child Protection Law. This law stipulates that anyone who commits child abuse or causes a child's death could face up to 10 years of imprisonment and a fine of up to 200 million Indonesian rupiah.
