The simplest truths are often the easiest to forget — Preface\How should one conduct oneself? What kind of person should one be? This is an art, and even more, a study. Many people never figure it out in their lifetime.\We often hear the sighs, "Being a good person is hard, behaving well is difficult," and we often realize, "First be a good person, then handle tasks well." This shows that being a good person is not a small matter but a significant issue, a compulsory lesson for everyone in life.\In a person's lifetime, there are essentially two things: being a good person and handling affairs well. Although there is no fixed rule or standard for being a good person, there are general principles and certain skills and patterns to follow. Here, I can only offer some small truths and gentle reminders.\1. Be an ambitious person\Mao Zedong once said, "With confidence, one can live for two hundred years and should strive to overcome three thousand miles of river."\Napoleon also once said, "A soldier who does not want to become a general is not a good soldier."\These famous sayings remind us that being a person requires faith and confidence. Faith is the guiding light leading us toward success, and confidence is the driving force to reach the peaks of life. A bright future comes from self-improvement, self-reliance, and self-confidence. Do not stop until your goal is achieved; hold on firmly like a mountain. The ones who often obstruct us are not others but ourselves. Do not see a single failure as the final judgment in life. Running away is cowardice; avoiding challenges is passive; retreating shows incompetence. The road to success must be forged by oneself. One may be confused in conduct and struggle in matters, but there is no smooth sailing in this world — only unwavering confidence and perseverance. A man standing in the world should decide for himself, fear no failure, and never give up.\When successful, do not fall into intoxication; when facing failure, do not be discouraged. Do not blame the heavens or others. When confronted with challenges like "mountains upon mountains and rivers upon rivers," only by moving forward courageously, persevering, and overcoming difficulties with confidence can we prevail. To achieve great undertakings, one must be willing to tackle significant tasks, embrace difficulties, set ambitions, and define goals — only then does life have direction. Your heart determines your path. With ambition comes the capability, courage, and boldness to be a proper person. Therefore, ask yourself: where is your ambition? Do you have confidence?\2. Be a kind person\"Human nature is inherently good." Kindness is the warmest, most beautiful, and most touching strand in the brilliance of human nature. In life, not everyone will achieve great success, and not everyone will become a hero, but everyone must be kind and compassionate.Kindness is the path to harmony and beauty. Only with compassion and kindness in the heart can one touch and warm the world. Without kindness, there can be no inner peace, nor can there be harmony and beauty in the world. Love is a fundamental feeling of kindness. When encountering a beggar, we give them some money; when seeing the elderly, weak, sick, disabled, or pregnant women, we offer our seat; when we meet a lost child, we help them return home or guide them. A smile, a simple action, a heartfelt greeting—these are not hard for us to do, yet they may help others out of difficulties. All people and all things are connected. When giving to others, you are truly benefiting yourself; when harming another life, in essence, you are harming yourself. The so-called kindness is nothing more than having a big heart and empathy, not harming, cheating, or hurting others. With a kind character, one has the foundation and possibility to genuinely love parents, others, and nature. A kind person is like a bright lamp, illuminating those around them while also warming themselves. Kindness does not need to be instilled or forced; it spreads and affects each other naturally. Therefore, a person does not need to achieve great fame or accomplish grand feats, but they must be kind and sincere. Thus, one should ask themselves if they want to be kind.
3. Be a Cultured Person
China is a nation that places great emphasis on self-cultivation and moral integrity. For five thousand years, no matter how the world changes, diligence, frugality, loyalty, righteousness, humility, and filial piety have remained timeless virtues, which many ancient sages and wise men regarded as family treasures. Small-scale success depends on opportunity, medium-scale success relies on ability, and great success entirely depends on character and integrity. Generally, successful people are also people of noble virtue. Being cultured means understanding depth, knowing respect and hierarchy, recognizing weight and importance, and adhering to rules and morality. Cultured people tend to rely on virtue rather than skills, follow principles rather than schemes, and practice etiquette rather than power. When alone, cultured individuals are naturally detached and manage their own hearts well. When interacting with others, they consider others, act kindly, remain composed, and control their speech. They handle themselves with balance, conduct affairs with flexibility, maintain serenity for long-term goals, and engage in self-reflection, which allows everything to be carried out with peace and ease. Therefore, one should ask themselves whether they are cultured.\4. Be an Optimistic Person\People come into the world not to suffer, so you cannot wear a stern face every day, constantly worry, be sad, distressed, or frustrated. Such a life has no joy. There is no absolute happiness in the world, only hearts unwilling to be happy. The world is like a mirror: you smile at it, it smiles back; you cry at it, it cries back; if your heart is calm, it returns calmness; if you are aggressive, it responds with cold hostility. Listening only to praise and disliking criticism, desiring fame and wealth but fearing their loss, this mindset will only imprison yourself like chains. Only by transcending them can one experience freedom and joy. Having a happy heart allows you to see a world worth rejoicing in; if your heart is full of sorrow, you will only see a world full of sadness. Rather than obsessing over what you cannot obtain, it is better to feel grateful for what you already have. Happiness cannot be sought outside the heart; it can only be found within. If the heart is content and joyful, even in a prison or a humble toilet, you can still remain at ease. Keep a good heart, do good deeds, fill yourself with joy, let happiness show on your face, stay optimistic, and you will stand as a monument and create beautiful scenery. Life is short; rather than being tense and stressed over everything, it is better to learn to "smile quietly." Therefore, you must ask yourself whether you are truly optimistic.\5. Be a Tolerant Person\The sea accommodates all rivers because of its tolerant heart. In life and work, one should not be narrow-minded. Every measure has its strengths and weaknesses; gold is not pure, and no human is perfect. Appreciate others' strengths and tolerate their shortcomings; this comes from a loving heart and the capacity to understand others. Becoming enraged over your enemies will only harm yourself. If you cannot bear a little provocation, you lash out with harsh words or actions; if you cannot tolerate others' pride, you become jealous and slanderous. Such a life is dim and narrow. The rights and wrongs, joys and sorrows, good and bad in the world should be accepted with an open heart; only then does the path become wider as you go. Tolerance is not weakness or retreat; it is the wisdom and courage to endure humiliation and bear burdens. It is seeing reality, taking responsibility, and understanding reconciliation and integration. Thinking of others paves the way for yourself. Tolerance is not indulgence; it involves reason and emotion while considering others' dignity and capacity to bear.Treating others well is equivalent to treating yourself well. No matter how life hurts you, there is no need to be resentful, carry grudges, or hold hatred in your heart. Learn to forget; forgetting is the best protection for yourself. Learn to be grateful and thank life for the opportunities to temper and improve yourself. When your soul is full of sunlight, life naturally becomes radiant. Therefore, one should ask themselves whether they are tolerant and magnanimous.\n\nSix, Be a Genuine Person\nBe down-to-earth in your character and sincere in your actions. A person who keeps their hands in their pockets can never climb the ladder of success. The more effort you put in, the more opportunities you will have for success. Heaven rewards diligence; don't just talk, don't be lazy, let diligence guide you. Heaven does not disappoint those who are dedicated and conscientious. Only by putting in effort and fulfilling your duties can you achieve great accomplishments. Those who never strive rarely fail, and those who never climb rarely stumble. To taste the flavor of success, you must dare to take risks and act boldly. Speak less and do more; if you hesitate and act inconsistently, you will inevitably miss opportunities. If you refuse the small tasks, you certainly cannot handle the bigger ones. Avoiding heavy responsibilities and aiming too high makes it difficult to achieve anything. One must start with sweeping a single room before sweeping the whole world. Begin with oneself, start now, start with small matters, and pay attention to every detail. Be honest, speak honestly, and act honestly; this is the foundation for lasting and meaningful success. Therefore, one should always ask themselves whether they are genuine.\n\nSeven, Be a Wise Person\nHaving knowledge does not equal having wisdom. No matter how much knowledge you accumulate, if you do not apply it with wisdom, it becomes worthless. Knowledge is static. Once you possess it, you must understand how to correctly apply it in practice. Without wisdom, a person is essentially just a book containing knowledge. Wisdom is the intelligence of the mind, a kind of insight and judgment. Courage allows you to change what can be changed; a broad mind allows you to accept what cannot be changed; but wisdom enables you to discern when something can or cannot be changed, to know when to act and when not to act. Wisdom is knowing what you are doing, knowing the types of work you love to do, and knowing what you can accomplish and how. This is wisdom. Vision alone, without wisdom, is meaningless.Wisdom is sometimes a matter of balance and compromise: using moderation to reject extremes, using reason to analyze situations, using pragmatism to exert influence, using calmness to make decisions, using self-awareness to correct one's attitude, using learning to accumulate experience, and using courage to let go of burdens. This is the manifestation of wisdom. For the weak, concern alone is not enough; help is needed. For subordinates, fairness alone is not enough; kindness is necessary. For others' mistakes, forgiveness alone is not enough; forgetting is required. For one's own future, dreams alone are not enough; action is necessary. Emptiness can give rise to wisdom, learning gives rise to intelligence, a peaceful mind generates insight, and insight leads to successful endeavors. Every person has qualities worth respecting and learning from. Compassionate people teach the way of compassion, rude people teach the way of endurance. If someone lacks wisdom and is unwilling to work hard, how can success be achieved? Therefore, being a person should be measured by whether you have wisdom.
8. Be an upright person
To be upright in character and proper in conduct, to act with integrity and fairness, is the foundation of personal standing and the basis of dealing with the world. A righteous person has nothing to fear from crooked shadows; feet that stand straight need not worry about uneven shoes. When the body is upright, the mind is at peace, and the soul and dreams are stable. With correct conduct, one has confidence in oneself and firmness in action. A selfless heart broadens one's world; consistency in character makes one open-minded. A clear conscience and upright conduct earn the trust and respect of others. If one is not upright oneself, how can one correct others? An upright person does not seek personal gain, does not crave profit, does not cover up faults, does not trick or deceive, does not flatter, does not ingratiate, does not act hypocritically, treats everyone equally, and handles matters justly. Speech is based on evidence: one says what should be said, does what should be done; words are truthful, actions are righteous. A person with impure intentions, who creates mystique, speaks contrary to their heart, uses schemes, acts deceitfully, presents one face in public and another in private, preaches virtue but behaves maliciously—how can such a person uphold justice? Therefore, one must walk straight, act properly, and be upright, and constantly ask oneself whether one is upright and just.
9. Be a cautious person
Wisdom lies in managing major matters; caution lies in fearing minor ones. One instance of careful consideration is better than a hundred rash actions. Small oversight can lead to a dam collapse or an ant's hole causing disaster; even minute matters cannot be neglected. Respect is the foremost virtue, and caution is the foundation of action. Being cautious is the basis of 'not being foolish.' A cautious person is necessarily clear-headed and will not be confused in matters of right and wrong. In life, some words can bring disaster, some actions can bring shame; to achieve merit and establish accomplishments, one must be exceptionally cautious. Live humbly, work with humility, think cautiously, and act diligently.Thinking ahead can prevent dangers nearby. When in favorable circumstances, being elated and complacent, one tends to blame heaven and others when facing setbacks, filling oneself with complaints, which makes it difficult to achieve anything significant. The saying 'Walking by the river often, yet your shoes never get wet' reflects your skill and composure. Even when bowing your head, you must learn to look up at the sky. Observe quietly and watch carefully, keep a mind as calm as still water, be humble and cautious, and things will be easier to accomplish. Caution is the sure way to avoid danger and ensure safety; relying on caution is more effective than recklessness. Only with caution can one secure victory. Therefore, in life, you must ask yourself whether you have been cautious.
The above nine points are not perfect. Humans are not sages or flawless beings; how can one be without flaws or regrets? To try to be all-encompassing and omnipotent has never existed from ancient times to the present. But in this world, there are only unimaginable things, not impossible things. Who am I? How should I conduct myself? What am I capable of? How well am I doing? Where am I going? On the vast journey of life, we must constantly question ourselves, remind ourselves, light a lamp in our hearts, and hone ourselves. Only then can we improve ourselves and achieve things successfully. Don't you agree?
