It was only through the passage of history and the development of society that they underwent considerable changes, becoming vastly different from their original words.\

'Marry a chicken, follow the chicken; marry a dog, follow the dog' was originally 'Marry a beggar, follow the beggar; marry an old man, follow the old man,' meaning that a woman must follow her husband for life, even if he is a beggar or an elderly man. Over time, this saying evolved into the current version with 'chicken' and 'dog.'\

2. 'Three cobblers with their wits combined equal Zhuge Liang'—here, 'cobbler' was actually a homophone for 'assistant general' ('裨将'), which in ancient times referred to a deputy general. The original meaning was that the combined wisdom of three deputy generals could match that of Zhuge Liang. Over time, 'assistant general' was mispronounced as 'cobbler.'\

3. 'No tears before seeing the coffin' was originally 'No tears before seeing the coffin of one's own relatives,' not that one cries at every coffin. The mistaken version 'no tears before seeing the coffin' would suggest that anyone's coffin could make you cry, which is rather absurd.\

4. 'Have eyes but fail to recognize gold inlaid with jade' was originally 'Have eyes but fail to recognize Jingshan jade.' 'Jing' refers to the ancient state of Chu; 'Jingshan jade' is the jade discovered by craftsmen in Jing Mountain.\

5. 'You won't give up until you reach the Yellow River' was originally 'You won't give up until you reach the Wu River.' Wu River is where Xiang Yu took his own life. How ‘Wu River' turned into ‘Yellow River' is truly inexplicable.\

'You can't catch a wolf without giving up your child' was originally 'You can't catch a wolf without giving up your shoes,' meaning that to hunt a wolf, you must not fear heavy loss or worn-out shoes. I can understand this a bit, as in Sichuan they sometimes refer to shoes as 'children.' Taking a real child to trap a wolf would be too horrifying!\

7. 'Nonsense' originally was 'Dog skin is useless.' Dogs' skins have no sweat glands, so in the heat of summer, dogs use their tongues to release internal heat. 'Dog skin is useless' refers to this characteristic. 'Fart' symbolizes filth, so using it to describe something illogical or incoherent makes some sense.\

8. 'Wang Ba Dan' (bastard) is a common insult. Originally, the phrase was 'Forget the eight virtues.'In ancient times, the 'Eight Beginnings' referred to 'filial piety, fraternal duty, loyalty, trustworthiness, propriety, righteousness, integrity, and a sense of shame.' These eight beginnings were considered the foundation of being human. Forgetting these 'Eight Beginnings' is essentially forgetting the basic principles of being a person. However, later they were distorted into the term 'bastard'.
