The Tathagata sent four disciples and their master, along with the Eight Heavenly Books and the Little White Dragon, to the Eastern Tang Dynasty to spread Buddhism. Along the way, they encountered various monsters, and in fighting them, they discovered that these monsters all had powerful backers and would not be punished for their evildoings. Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing felt the world was too dark—one hid in Gao Village, and the other submerged in the Flowing Sand River. Only Wukong persisted in justice, slaying demons and protecting his master on the journey east to preach.
Eventually, the Heavenly Court could no longer tolerate Wukong and reached an agreement with the Tathagata: 'We can ensure Tang Sanzang safely reaches Chang'an, but you must deal with this troublemaker Sun Wukong.' The Tathagata agreed. Through a plot, the White Dragon was gravely injured and fell into a mountain ravine, and Wukong was defeated and trapped under the Five Finger Mountain. Tang Sanzang abandoned Wukong and arrived in Chang'an alone, completed his teaching, was appointed as an Imperial Preceptor, enjoyed wealth and glory, and died a natural death.
Five hundred years later, Wukong finally escaped from under the Five Finger Mountain, causing chaos in the Heavenly Court without saying a word. The Heavenly Court, forced to compromise, promised to allow Zhu Bajie to become human and be appointed as Marshal Tianpeng, and Sha Wujing as General Unrolling the Curtain, provided they could kill Sun Wukong.
In the end, a disheartened Wukong, saddened by fraternal conflict, went to seek guidance from the Patriarch Bodhi. He sealed his abilities, threw the Ruyi Jingu Bang into the Eastern Sea, where it became the Stabilizing Sea Pillar, returned to Flower-Fruit Mountain, and lived out an ordinary life with his monkey offspring. Finally, at the top of Flower-Fruit Mountain, he turned into a stone...
