The books say so many good things about Lu Xun that it's unbalanced. Today I'm here to shake things up; if I don't, I'm not being human.
Lu Xun was just a frog who did fairly well in a pit filled with thousands of people. He could croak a few times, but he couldn't come up with a cure for China, because he refused to stand on a mountain and look at the world and never promoted Western civilization. His writings were mostly for himself, and less for science and democracy. He always considered his own future more than the country's long-term prospects. He had no new ideas; regarding the new ideas of the time, he was critical. He criticized Confucius, but only in a hollow way, not knowing how to compensate when moral standards are reversed, because he wouldn't read the Bible. His 'The True Story of Ah Q' only depicts the surface level of the revolutionary process, without showing its purpose; he couldn't, like Victor Hugo in France, focus on a scene with a revolutionary stance, because Lu Xun himself hadn't studied deeply, didn't understand what revolution, science, or democracy were. Politically, he took the wrong stance and opposed Hu Shi. In the end, he lacked a broad international and historical perspective, lacked confidence, and didn't possess the scholarly level a writer should have. He was just an essayist, no need to classify further.

Well, I also agree with some of the original poster's points, but at least Lu Xun was able to speak out, which is still very commendable.
