World Origin
At the beginning of the world, there was neither heaven nor earth; in the dense fog, there was only a bottomless chasm called Ginnungagap.
To the north of the chasm was the land of mist and darkness, Niflheim, which contained the inexhaustible spring Hvergelmir, the source of all waters. To the south of the chasm was the land of fire, Muspelheim, guarded by the fire giant Surtr. In the interwoven heat of the fire land and the ice, the progenitor of the frost giants, Ymir, was born. From his body came the wise giant Mimir and the female giant Bestla, and from his feet was born a six-headed giant called Bergelmir, who became the ancestor of all future evil giants.
Also, from the ice was born Buri, the progenitor of the gods. Buri gave birth to Borr, who then combined with the female giant Bestla to give birth to three great gods: Odin, Vili, and Ve.
Later, these three great gods led the deities in a fierce battle against the giants, killing Ymir and defeating the giants. Ymir's spilled blood turned into the ocean, drowning all the giants, with only Bergelmir and his wife escaping to Jotunheim, where they swore to seek revenge against the gods.
The gods transformed Ymir's body into the earth, named Midgard, the place where humans live; his eyebrows were made into the boundary wall between the earth and the heavens; his blood and sweat became the ocean; his bones formed the mountains; his teeth became stones; his hair became trees and plants; his skull became the celestial bodies; and his brain was transformed into clouds.
Furthermore, the gods appointed four dwarf strongmen at the four directions to hold up the sky. These four dwarf strongmen were: Nord (North), Sudr (South), Aust (East), and Vestr (West).
