To be honest, my first reaction when I saw the description in this recommendation post was "999 per knife" was to laugh out loud😂. I'm not going to brag about it, but Soul Knight and those legendary web games are completely two-dimensional things. As an old player who has been around since the Saipan era, I am all too familiar with this kind of "clickbait"-style publicity, but the products of Cool House Games have never relied on gimmicks to make a living.
My playing of Soul Knight can probably be traced back to the end of 2016. Not long after it was released, it was still a niche dungeon game. Pixel style, barrage shooting, and all kinds of weird weapons. To be honest, I was caught by the "simple and exciting" rhythm the first time I started playing. Looking back now, it actually hit a very important industry trend: the return of mobile games from heavy krypton gold to "lightweight + high replayability".
In the early Symbian era, games were all single-player. Later, in the early days of smartphones, everyone pursued graphics and operation, such as those masterpieces of Gameloft. In the past two years, Roguelike games like Vitality Knight have become more and more popular, indicating that players are increasingly resistant to "certainty" payment. You spend time brushing up maps, unlocking characters, and matching weapons, relying on skill and luck, not the thickness of your wallet. Liangwu has been very restrained in its free + in-app purchase skin model, which makes old players willing to spend money to support it.
Another trend is the “de-pressure” of online socializing. The online mode of Soul Knight is very relaxed. Unlike King, which requires operation and coordination, you can still laugh out loud when you throw weapons around with your friends in the dungeon and accidentally hurt each other. This kind of "coupling" social interaction is actually more durable than strong competition. I occasionally hang out with a few old buddies on weekends, chatting about everything from nostalgia to industry news, which is quite fun.
Of course, without bragging, Soul Knight also has problems. For example, later updates are a bit perfunctory, new characters or skins are getting more and more fancy, and randomness sometimes compromises the "fun" feeling. But as a free game, it has been with me for almost ten years. From the pixel villains in the dungeon to the current barrage system, Cool House has at least not gone astray.
One final word: The mobile game industry is currently in great decline, but "subtractive" products like Vitality Knight will survive longer. If you haven't tried it yet, I suggest you put aside the stereotype of "a knife costs 999" and go in and buy two. You will understand what I am talking about. 🧐💎
