To be honest, when I saw that there were new people in the forum who were willing to try "Temple Run 2", I felt quite emotional. As someone who has been in the mobile gaming circle since the Nokia Symbian era, I am probably the first batch of veteran players to come into contact with this series. At that time, Temple Run 1 had just come out, and the resolution of mobile phones was only 320×240. The 3D modeling looked like squares, but the intense and exciting feeling of "being chased" made me play it thousands of times on the Nokia N97.
Going back to "Temple Run 2", I don't want to brag about it. This game has been able to maintain its vitality from its launch in 2013 to the present. There is indeed a reason for it. First of all, the picture was considered epoch-making at the time - the realistic temple scenes, light and shadow effects, the ferocious expressions of the demon guards, and the physical feedback of the ground collapsing and the characters rolling are still outdated today. Especially when you are running on a narrow plank road and the heavy footsteps of guards are heard behind you, the sense of oppression will not weaken just because you have brushed it countless times. 😅
In terms of operation, the classic three-lane sliding plus force sensor is easy to get started but difficult to master. As a 30-year-old player with old arms and legs, my reaction speed is definitely not as fast as that of young people. But the best thing about this game is that it does not rely on absolute reactions, and it tests your prediction of rhythm. For example, after making a continuous left turn, you immediately receive a sliding shovel, and then slide left in the air to avoid obstacles. If you memorize this combination, you will be able to achieve the feeling of flowing clouds and flowing water. Moreover, it added a character upgrade and skill system. Although the krypton gold element later became a bit more, the zero-yuan party can still unlock most of the content by relying on its liver, which is considered friendly.
When it comes to the soul of parkour games, it's not actually how far you run, but the obsession of “definitely being able to go farther next time.” I spent all night brushing up points just to break my own record. There was no ranking list at that time, so I was purely competing against myself. Now "Temple Run 2" has added online leaderboards and daily challenges, making it more social, but the core is still the simple sense of chasing. In addition, the story background of the game is quite interesting - the god-stealing statue is cursed and is always on the run. This setting vaguely reveals a metaphor of "the price of greed", which makes players like me who love to ponder the plot very interested. 😂
From an industry perspective, parkour games starting from Temple Run 2 have basically established the standard template for 3D parkour on mobile devices. Later, many similar works, such as "Subway Surfers" and "Ninja Must Die", more or less referenced it. And "Temple Run 2" has been continuously updated for more than ten years, with new maps, new characters, and continuous linkage activities, which shows that the developers have worked hard on the content. But to be honest, I miss the pure "one road to the end" version in the early days. Now there are too many elements and it occasionally looks gimmicky.
Finally, I would like to give some advice to newcomers: Don't rush to read the guide. First, learn to use your intuition to slide the screen and feel the tacit understanding between your fingers and the screen. Also, don't be discouraged just because of one mistake – the most important thing this game has taught me is “if you don't give up, the exit may be just around the next corner”. As the game introduction says, hope is always ahead. 😊
Welcome to the pit and let's run together.
