To be honest, when I opened "Zombie War", I almost thought I had traveled back ten years. The pixel art style, hard-core survival gameplay, and pure free model without any in-app purchases are like a breath of fresh air in today's mobile game market. As an old player from the Symbian era, I have played at least dozens of zombie-themed mobile games, from "Zombie Rising" to "Death Trigger", but this game really made me find a little bit of the feeling of hiding in bed and playing games on a Nokia N95.
The core gameplay of the game is simple: you drive a bus and survive in a zombie-infested wasteland. Along the way, you need to continuously collect resources, build camps, recruit warriors, and then send them to kill the pixel zombies who are eager to eat meat. The weapon system is quite rich, ranging from barrels, Molotov cocktails to grenades, and even stealth assassination. Although the operation feel is not top-notch, it is clean and neat, and there are no fancy card drawing and recharge buttons in current mobile games.
What surprised me most was the depth of strategy. Even though the picture is pixelated, you really need to use your brain to play it well. For example, if you encounter a group of zombies blocking the road, do you directly attack them, or do you take a detour and sneak around? How to lay out camp construction to maximize defense efficiency? The match-up of the Warriors team also needs to be considered - should we go all out with full output, or should we bring a few healing characters to grind it out slowly? This kind of "brain-driven" design reminds me of the old games like "Zombie Town" that relied on operation and strategy, rather than the popular automatic hang-up and one-click sweep.
Of course, there are also shortcomings. The graphics are indeed crude, which may not be pleasing to today's mainstream aesthetics, and the sound effects are also relatively monotonous, making it a bit boring after playing for a long time. And the version is stopped at 5.0. It feels like it hasn't been updated for a long time. I don't know if the development team is still maintaining it. However, considering that it is a completely free game without any ads or in-app purchases, I think these flaws are completely acceptable.
To be honest, in today's mobile game market where the screen is full of krypton gold gift packages and daily tasks, it is really rare to encounter such a zombie game made purely for fun. If you also miss the era when games were just games and there were not many business routines, you might as well give it a try. Use your brain and don't let it be eaten by zombies🧟♂️💥
