To be honest, the mobile game market has been really impetuous recently, with money being drawn and automatic pathfinding all the time. An old player like me, who has been struggling since the Symbian era, can hardly find a game that I can concentrate on playing. But I accidentally downloaded "Horror Granny" a few days ago. I don't want to brag about it, but it really feels a bit like hiding in bed and playing "Maze Escape". 😌
Let's talk about the gameplay first. It's very simple. You are locked in a house by a crazy old lady and you have to find a way to escape within five days. The core is sneaking, hiding, and solving puzzles. It sounds cliché, but in actual play, the tension is well captured. You walk very lightly, and if you accidentally knock something over, the old lady rushes over with a bang, and your heart will jump out of fear. Hiding in the closet or under the bed and watching her pass by, the depressing feeling is stronger than many domestic horror movies. 👻
As for the graphics, I can't say they're exquisite, just in a low-polygon style, but it's better because the atmosphere is well rendered. The light is dim, the furniture is shabby, and the old lady's face can give you goosebumps from a distance. To be honest, this art style feels more "scary" than those current games that often feature high-definition textures and light pollution. The operation is also very retro, with virtual joysticks and interactive keys, and the response should be fast. It is a bit of a "hardcore" experience like the peak of mobile games back then, and is not for the handicapped. 🧠
What surprised me the most is that this game is free with zero in-app purchases. The developer Hainan Star Jump has a very serious name, but the content it produces is quite "cult". These days, stand-alone mobile games that can be played continuously without physical exertion or watching ads are simply a rare species. Although it is just a small-level game, it can be seen that the planning has been careful in the interactive logic of the levels - for example, some doors need to pick locks, some drawers have keys hidden, and there are different ending routes, so it will not be boring even if you play it multiple times.
Not to brag, but if you like the style of "Escape" but want to find a portable version, or want to reminisce about the "simple but deadly" game experience on Symbian back then, you can try this. Warm reminder: Play with headphones to double the effect. Also, don't let your mother see you playing, otherwise she may wonder if you are secretly playing something inappropriate...😂
