To be honest, before playing this game, I had not played a mobile elimination game for a long time. The skin-changing elimination games on the market now either have full screens of krypton gold gift packs or unlimited physical limits, and they always feel a bit lacking in flavor when playing. But "Block Story" surprised me a little. It reminded me of those old games from the Symbian era that relied purely on gameplay to win.
The core mechanism of the game is actually not complicated. It is to collect cubes and eliminate them if you get three of the same color. But the beauty of it is that you not only have to be quick-eyed, but also have to use your brain - there are only 7 grids in the collection box below, and the blocks will continue to appear. You have to predict what colors will come later, and whether to keep or collect them. Every step has to be weighed. This combination of "hand speed + strategy" reminds me of the concentration I felt when playing "Bejeweled" before.
The graphics are Japanese-style and cute, and the patterns on the blocks are also very cute, but I think the developers paid more attention to rhythm control. The speed of the game does not reach the highest level as soon as it starts, but gradually, allowing you to slowly adapt. After I became familiar with the rhythm, my fingers quickly clicked on the screen, and the squares jingled and fell into the frame. The smooth feedback was really relaxing.
But what impresses me most is that this game has no in-app purchases and no advertising pop-ups. To be honest, in the mobile game market of 2024, this kind of behavior is simply like a "living Lei Feng". The developer, Nanjing Moxie Network Technology, may not be a big company, but the things it produces are sincere. Looking back over the years, how many good games have died because of overdrafting the trust of players. There are really not many studios that can calm down and make a pure puzzle game.
Of course, the game is not without its shortcomings. The number of levels currently feels a little low, and the speed of unlocking new content later in the game is a bit slow. In addition, if variant gameplays other than the classic mode can be added later, such as limited-time challenges and two-player battles, the playability will be even higher. But for a free and cost-free game, these are understandable.
If you are a player who likes memory training, hand speed challenges, or simply looking for a time-killing game that doesn't require much brainpower or effort, you can give it a try. I wouldn't say it's a masterpiece, but it allowed me to rediscover the simple joy of “picking up my phone and playing”. After all, when it comes to games, having fun is the most important thing. 😌
