To be honest, when I saw the game "War Chess Three Kingdoms", I was stunned for several seconds. It's not because of how stunning the picture is, but because as soon as the name came out, the BGM of "Three Kingdoms: Cao Cao" automatically played in my mind. It was still the Symbian era, and I would hide in bed every day, using the keyboard to play levels one after another, and re-open the levels repeatedly, just to save the life of a certain general or to collect a certain hidden item. 😭
Not to brag, many mobile games are now called "war chess", but when you play, you will either automatically hang up, or draw cards to develop, and the real gameplay of moving grids, counting steps, stuck terrain, and protecting the back row is marginalized. The first feeling that "War Chess Three Kingdoms" gave me was that it was really "returning". It's not the kind of retro that's so hard-core that you'd rather quit, but the pure and solid mechanism of "The Legend of Cao Cao" has been moved over and made some subtle optimizations.
For example, there are hundreds of levels, and the map of each level is not small, and the enemy's AI is not mindless. Sometimes it will ambush and attack from a flank, which requires you to carefully arrange your troops. The generals also have their own characteristics, such as Zhang Liao's surprise attack, Guan Yu's Green Dragon Sword, and Zhao Yun's solo savior. They are very immersive to use, and they are not the kind of characters that can be replaced by just changing skins. And the most reassuring thing for me is that this game is free, there is no card drawing, no pressure, and you can play it purely by relying on strategy and patience. 👌
As an old gamer like me, it's hard to find the “one level, one afternoon” patience that I had when playing games now. But "War Chess Three Kingdoms" allowed me to rediscover that feeling - not to grind for materials, not to rush the rankings, but simply to beat this level and then breathe a sigh of relief. If you are like me and miss the era when krypton gold was not even invented yet, and want to find a war chess game that you can calm down and play slowly, I recommend giving this one a try. 😎
