Don't laugh yet, this time it's really not a loss, because I took off directly on the spot looking at the three-dimensional drawing of the machine in "Gundam Showdown" - ah, the light and shadow, ah, the metallic texture, ah, the moment when the wings of the Free Gundam spread out... I shouted directly on the spot, "This is my escape." plan!” (Subject of secondary disease) To be honest, as a otaku who is obsessed with the two-dimensional painting style, I admit that I am the type of person who says, “As long as the stand-up is cool enough and the gameplay looks like 💩, I can lick the screen with tears in my eyes.” And "Gundam Showdown"... Well, how should I put it, it's the kind of game where "you know it's here to trick your emotions, but you still take out your wallet obediently when you see the Gundam models moving on the screen."
But today I'm not here to tell you how fun Amway is, I'm here to complain! 🚨 Because I recently discovered that games with “god-like graphics and ghostly gameplay” are my nemesis. Take "Gundam Showdown" as an example. The 3D modeling and combat performance of the aircraft are indeed "burning to the point of explosion" - each main combat aircraft has its own exclusive ultimate move, such as Moonlight Butterfly, Floating Cannon Volley, and Stone Breaking Fist. In conjunction with the captain's combined skills, I had an orgasm in my head as soon as the animation was released. I felt like I was shouting "Don't stop!" in the cockpit😭
But once you enter the gameplay...ah, this familiar feeling. It's the kind of "numerical collision" turn-based system. You adjust your lineup, click "Attack", and then watch the two sides put skills on each other, and fight hard to develop. Strategy? Yes, but not much. Operational feel? Doesn't exist. The combat system feels like I'm watching a theater version of "I Know the Ending" - whoever is more powerful wins anyway, micromanaging? Doesn't exist. 😅
But! But why do I keep playing? Because of the style of painting! Brothers, do you understand? When you can collect all the Z Gundams from "Mobile Suit Z", the Strike Freedom from "SEED", and the Unicorns from "UC", and then watch them pose on the main interface, the satisfaction of "I want them all" directly overwhelms any resentment towards the combat system. I even went through the activity book for three days in order to draw a certain machine. During this period, I scolded the planner countless times, "Did you do this numerical balance with your feet?" But every time I saw the golden light flashing in the recruitment animation, I instantly lost my memory: "It smells so good!"🥹
And talking about the voice actors - the voice actors of all the pilots in this game are really top-notch! Toru Furuya, Shuichi Ikeda, Tomoichi Seki, Soichiro Hoshi... to one ear they all sound like "Childhood Memories Killing". Every time I attack, I can't help but turn up the volume just to hear "Amuro, attack!" or "Kira, Yamato!". No matter how boring the battle is, I can imagine ten episodes of TV animation just by listening to the voice. This is probably "Sound Dolphin's self-cultivation". ✨
Going back to the topic of "good graphics but bad gameplay", I have recently tried several new games, such as "the graphics are beautiful but the combat is automatic", "the CG is comparable to the theater version but the operation is like PPT", "the characters are exquisite to every hair but the level design is like shit". It's the same process every time: I'll be fooled by the promotional pictures first, press the screenshot button like crazy within three minutes, and then when I reach the tenth level, I'll start to doubt my life: "What on earth am I doing? Am I just here to collect wallpapers?" 🤯
But in the end we still endure it, because in the second dimension, what are we looking at? It's love! It's the realization that "even if your gameplay sucks to the core of the earth, as long as my wife/husband is good-looking enough, I can continue to fight for them." It's like those classic lines in "Gundam Showdown" - "As long as you live, you can feel each other." No matter how confusing the gameplay is, as long as I can still see those machines and characters, I still have a reason to persist. 🙏
So, if you, like me, are a two-dimensional otaku who "comes first in painting style," then "Gundam Showdown" is definitely worth a try. Don't look at its combat system that may make you want to drop your phone midway - what? Dropped the phone? How can you still read the vertical painting if it's broken? Doesn't exist! Anyway, I have automatically switched to "Buddha mode" in order to lick the screen: go online, look at my hangar, watch the machine rotate in circles, listen to a few lines, and then log off silently. How to play? That's for cash deposit play. For us in the second dimension, having a style of painting is enough! 😎
Finally, I shouted: Free Gundam, I have been waiting for you for twelve years, and I finally got you - no matter how bad the gameplay is, I will put you on the main interface with a wedding ring every day (no), and stay with me every day! ✨
The above is a sincere (?) recommendation from a housekeeper who is tamed by the painting style.
